“ But there was longing, too, in the way I looked at Lorna. In the novel’s prologue, Jess looks back on her feelings for her teacher: Like Julian Morrow– The Secret History’s Classics professor–Lorna Clay is described as an extremely charismatic figure. Specifically, Lorna is teaching about Agatha Christie, whose works are a major part of the atmosphere of Weinberg’s novel. The protagonist, Jess Walker, is a British undergraduate student who enrols at a university in Norfolk to study English Literature with the famous professor Lorna Clay (author of the best-selling The Truants). Kate Weinberg’s debut novel The Truants fits into this mold. For example, the main characters in The Secret History are Classics students. They often feature characters who are deeply involved in the humanities and liberal arts. These works are variations on the “campus novel” but of a much more sinister kind, usually involving themes of murder and suicide. Donna Tartt’s The Secret History has been credited with inventing the genre of “dark academia”.
